YOU TELL ME

I applied for a popular art show in another state and recently received THE rejection letter. Several weeks later their website posted a list of all the artists that were accepted. Being the competitive person I am, I checked out each of the photographers to see how I compared as a photographer. So here we are. I have inserted two images below.

One was accepted and one wasn't. One is mine and one isn't. Mine was shot last year at Brookgreen Gardens. One was shot in the summer and one in the winter, thus the lack of leaves in the top image. I converted mine to black and white to make it easier to compare.

Tell me what you think. Can you guess which one is in the show?

OK, I'll bite.... I think the one on the bottom got in.... But if I'm right it's a simple cheat - only the top one would enlarge. Heh!

So... hmm, which one.... Hmm. The top one has a nice B&W structure; bottom has interesting lighting, quite stark.... lots of hard edges.

For my taste I would gravitate to the top one - not because it's 'better,' but....

OK, I got it... I prefer the top only because it tells me a better story.

Sorry if I can't really do a decent job with the visual aesthetic stuff.

I do think (whichever pic was yours) that you got bumped because they looked at yours before lunch and the other one after lunch. We all know the world looks a lot better after lunch and so do pictures....

Keep trying....

If I were to guess..... and remember this is only my opinion.... and I am only looking at the pictures...... I would guess the bottom picture got in. it looks like the top picture has subtle values with nothing "too dark" or "too light"... not enough visual interest because of the values. The bottom one has more contrasting values hence looks interesting. Perhaps if the top one had some contrast work done to it or some other thing it would become very interesting to view.

I apologize if I chose wrong but "thems the way I see it".

Bottom one has too much contrast and multiple subjects to distract the viewer. I prefer the top foto. Softer and more pleasing to my eye.
